The 5th of January 2017 saw in the first meeting of the year for the Waterford Stroke Support Group. An exciting month lay ahead with my appointment as the new Stroke Support Group Co-Ordinator for Waterford County. The Irish Heart Foundation in conjunction with the HSE will now be providing weekly Stroke Support
Group Meetings. Research among stroke survivors revealed it was crucial to provide weekly support to aid recovery. This change from monthly to weekly meetings will mean more support, more activities and best of all more fun and enjoyment for all who attend the group. I received a very warm welcome to the group and look forward to the year ahead.
For the month of January the Waterford group spent time setting our goals for the year, planning activities and ideas for days out. In February, Breda Jones CNS stroke care provided us with invaluable stroke education. We also welcomed Sorcha Murphy. Sorcha provided us with an energetic and relaxing exercise programme and will continue to do so into March. We enjoyed playing cards, participating in quizzes and puzzles as well as some meditation. The Waterford group meets every Thursday 2:30 -4:30 pm at Edmund Rice Heritage Centre in the Grosvenor Room.
Another exiting development this year is the launch of Dungarvan Stroke Support Group which is happening on the 1st March 2017 at 6pm in The Park Hotel Dungarvan. This is a free event for all with an interest in stroke to attend. Weekly meetings will commence on the 7th March from 11-1pm also in The Park Hotel. We look forward to this next chapter and we will update with further developments and news next month.
