In Waterford, our group headed off for the Annual Irish Heart Foundation Stroke Survivor Day in Croke Park on Tuesday 4th April. The Stroke Survivor Day includes speakers in the morning, lunch and workshops in the afternoon. It is a free event to attend and up to 400 stroke survivors and their families or carers attend each year. This years speakers included Barry Dempsey, CEO Irish Heart; Jillian Ennis O’ Boyle, stroke survivor and campaigner; Professor Joseph Harbison, Stroke Doctor and HSE National Stroke Programme Lead; Dr. Aine Connolly, Senior Clinical Psychologist , Stroke Service Tallaght Hospital and Natalie Treacy, Carer and Fingal County Councillor. One of our very own Stroke Support Coordinators Julie Duffy also gave a 15 minute exercise session to get everyone moving. All of these speakers were exceptional especially stroke survivor Jillian Ennis O’ Boyle. Jillian’s personal stroke story is truly moving and inspirational. In the afternoon, after lunch was served, several workshops took place covering a vast number of topics, some of which included diet, mindfulness, stress management, aphasia, fatigue and much more. The Stroke Survivor Day is well worth a visit for anyone thinking of attending next year.
